A man has been rescued from the lions’ enclosure at Barcelona Zoo, Spain, after being seriously mauled by three lions.
A former police officer, Justo Jose, climbed into the lions’ den,
where he was attacked by three of the animals for about half-an-hour
before he could be rescued. Footage that appeared on the Internet after
the
incident occurred shows him scaling one of the enclosure’s walls before being tossed by the leg into a pit by a lioness.
According to police, the man wearing a military-style uniform climbed
over fencing to enter the enclosure as horrified tourists watched on.
Emergency services used fire hoses to distance the lions from the man,
who had been attacked and dragged into a tunnel within their enclosure.
The 45-year-old was rescued and rushed to hospital, where he is in
serious, but not life-threatening condition. It was gathered that Mr
Jose was a former head of the municipal police force and spent 13 years
working as a Civil Guard. He has been on paid leave from the force since
earlier this year but he went on extended leave after he lost custody
of his son, divorced his wife, and lost his mother.
