The body of late South Africa and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa will be dug up by the family so that they can reunite him with his dead twin brother
Senzo’s twin, Siya drowned while in grade 2 when they went swimming with their father Sam Meyiwa and a friend at Isipingo beach; the goalkeeper was rescued but help was late for the brother.
According
to Zulu tradition, twins should be buried side-by-side, and the family
could not do it on the day of Senzo’s burial as he was laid-to-rest in a
national cemetery which is reserved for local heroes.
South African media, Sunday World reports that ‘’Siya's
remains will be exhumed from Madlakeni Cemetery and interred in the
same grave with Senzo at Heroes Acre in Chesterville, KwaZulu-Natal.’’
"The
family held a meeting where it was discussed that two people who were
born at the same time cannot sleep in two separate places. They have to
be laid to rest together," a family member said.
A senior official of the KZN community disclosed that the family made a request for the translocation.
"The
matter is now being discussed within government but I don't think a
decision will be made soon. Things like this normally take months
because of its legal nature. All due process has to be followed."
