Hoodlums Attack INEC Officials, Snatch 3,366 PVCs

No fewer than 3,366 Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) were snatched by suspected hoodlums in Izzi and Ikwo local government areas of Ebonyi State.

This was disclosed on Thursday by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state Dr. Lawrence Azubuike in Abakaliki, the state capital, The Nation reports.
Azubuike said: “In the last three days, 3,366 PVCs have been snatched from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) workers.
“At Eka Awoke in Ikwo Local Government, suspected thugs snatched 302 PVCs from INEC officials, who were distributing them.
“At Igbeagu III in Izzi Local Government on Tuesday, 3,064 PVCs were snatched. In Ohaukwu Local Government, INEC workers were attacked when distributing PVCs. However, no card was snatched.”
The REC condemned the incident, advising those behind it to stop.
He stated that it was wasted effort to snatch PVCs that belonged to others.
PVC in the possession of a wrong owner is a useless piece of card. You cannot use any PVC that is not your own to vote. A card reader has been introduced to ensure this. Disenfranchising others by preventing them from collecting their cards does not help candidates’ chances of being elected,” he said.
Azubuike therefore called on the people to ensure that the 2015 elections in the state were not marred by unnecessary violence and irregularities.
He said the extension of the collection of PVCs to February 8, 2015, is to ensure that every eligible voter gets theirs before the election.

INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega had said 66 percent of the 68,833,476 registered voters have collected their PVCs.
Various states across the country have declared public holidays to enable eligible voters in the states to collect their PVCs, for next weekend general elections.
