Have you ever seen a church made entirely from ice? Now you
have a unique chance to visit one at Balea Lac resort in the Fagaras
mountains, Romania.
The Ice Church is located at the Balea Lac resort in the Fagaras mountains. It was built after water from Balea Lake was frozen and the ice had been blessed by priests. The cathedral was cut by a chainsaw and cemented together with water and snow. It is six metres tall, 14 metres long and seven metres wide.
After a service attended by more than a dozen worshippers Michael Regen, a priest from the Evangelical Church, said, “We are submerged in water now, surrounded by water. Let this be a place for us to pray, let this be a place where people come with pleasure.”
The unusual church is considered to be a place for religious tolerance. Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant clerics have already held a service there this week. Ioan Crisan, an Eastern Rite Catholic priest, said,“For a few moments, people forget what they left down in the valley: the fights, the misunderstandings, the contradictory arguments.”
