Still angered by the postponement of the 2015
elections, a human rights activist, lawyer and also a member of the All
Progressives Congress (APC), Titiloye Charles, has filed a lawsuit at
the Federal High Court, Akure, the Ondo state capital.
In this case, the defendants are the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Attahiru Jega and the INEC itself.
The elections, which were originally scheduled to be held on February 14 and March 28, were moved to March 28 and April 11, and many Nigerians have been reacting to the shift, with some believing it is a conspiracy between the INEC and the ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to have more time to rig the elections.
Sahara Reporters reports that the plaintiff asked the court to declare the INEC chairman’s decision to postpone the general election as null, void and unconstitutional.
Charles further urged the court to declare that Jega compromised the INEC’s independence and objectivity by acting and relying on a letter from the national security advisor, Sambo Dasuki, who is a political appointee and aide to President Goodluck Jonathan, the PDP’s presidential candidate. In the letter Dasuki, a retired military officer, proposed the postponement of the elections on security grounds.
