Presidential Debate: Jonathan, Buhari To Meet On Feb. 3

The voters in Nigeria might have a chance to see the leading candidates for the presidential election, Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari, in action, as an alternative for the time and the venue for the debates has emerged.

According to ThisDay, the presidential debate is scheduled for February 3, 2015, Tuesday, at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja. It is initiated by and ARISE Television and Channels TV. The Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN) will be presented by THISDAY and Guardian Newspapers Limited.
Attendance at the event is strictly by invitation.
In the letter dated January 11, 2015 to both candidates and delivered the same day, the organisers had noted that “too many of the troubles we now face stem from governance: decisions made behind closed doors, regulations removed when no one was looking, or reckless actions and impunity across the polity.
“Our nation is strongest when our elected leaders are accessible and accountable to its citizens, explaining decisions and answering tough questions. That standard of openness and transparency must start long before Election Day on February 14, 2015,” the letter also read in part.
The Tuesday debate may come as an alternative to the offer by the Nigeria Election Debate Group, which has been principally rejected by the flag-bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his team.
Currently, the organisers of the February 3 debates confirmed that Jonathan/Sambo 2015 Presidential Campaign Organisation had accepted the invitation in written form.
Senator Ahmadu Ali, Director General of the Jonathan/Sambo 2015 Presidential Campaign Organisation, wrote that Jonathan’s team “has accepted to participate in the debate.”
General Buhari / Osinbajo Campaign Organisation has indicated its intention to participate in principle. However, the written reply was not available at the time of publishing the present report.
This means that the upcoming debate might not repeat the fate of BON-organised February 8th event.
